Madison, WI - July 23, 2008. Alex Rivers (Santa Clara) makes his fifth start of the season tonight for the Mallards in hopes of ending the team's three-game losing streak. Eau Claire defeated Madison Tuesday night 8-2 at Carson Park and will send left-hander J.D. Reichenbach to the mound to try to get the sweep of the Mallards. The Mallards offense sputtered tonight against the Eau Claire Express, managing just two runs on three hits and dropped an 8-2 contest in front of 1,374 fans at Carson Park Tuesday night. D.J. Mauldin earned the win for the Express, working seven solid innings and allowing just two hits and no earned runs. Kyle Heim (Iowa) took the loss for the Mallards, pitching four innings and giving up one unearned run and two hits. This comeback victory completed the sweep of the double header tonight, making up a game from earlier this season. The Mallards will travel tomorrow to Eau Claire to take on the Express. With a first-half Northwoods League South Division championship under their belts the Madison Mallards are returning to the postseason after a one-year hiatus in 2007, and the team is pleased to announce playoff ticket information for all fans wishing to catch the action at the “Duck Pond.” The Mallards will be hosting their first playoff game on either Tuesday, August 12 or Wednesday, August 13, with more details to be determined as the playoff field is finalized. Beginning Wednesday, July 16 season-ticket holders will have the first opportunity to purchase playoff tickets. Tickets will only be available in a package of all four potential home playoff games. Mankato outfielder Michael Rockett hit 10 home runs, including five in the final round, to win the 2008 Northwoods League Home Run Derby Sunday night at the “Duck Pond.” Rockett, a 6’1” 165 lb junior from the University of Texas-San Antonio, blasted numerous long balls over the entire left-field Budweiser Rooftop, a distance well over 380’ from home plate. He hit five long balls in the first round to advance to meet Waterloo outfielder Joey Register (Texas A&M), Green Bay infielder Nick O’Shea (Minnesota), and Wisconsin outfielder Troy Frazier (Kentucky) in the final round. In a matchup of All-Star pitchers it was the offense for both teams that stole the show, as the Mallards used an eight-run fifth inning to propel themselves to a 15-12 victory over the Alexandria Beetles. Gabriel Shaw (Louisville) and Matt Hill did not have their all-star stuff tonight, as Shaw was relieved after three innings of work and Hill was sent to the showers after giving up four runs in that eight-run Madison fifth. The win gives the Mallards the series sweep of the Beetles, and means that the Mallards will head back to Madison with a 5-5 record on the 10-game, 11-day road trip and a 2-4 second-half mark. A day after leaving nine runners on base in a 4-1 defeat the Mallards again struggled to move runners Tuesday night, stranding 11 on base in a 3-0 loss to the Duluth Huskies. The shutout loss drops the Mallards to 0-4 to start the second half. Matt Jansen (Purdue) took the loss for the Mallards, and five Huskies hurlers combined to allow just three Madison hits on the night. With Colorado Rockies centerfielder Willy Taveras still nursing a sore left quad, former Mallard Ryan Spilborghs (2001) continues to swing a hot bat while hitting leadoff for the Mile-High club. In the first three games of a four game series versus the Florida Marlins ending Sunday, Spilborghs (pictured) was 7-for-14 with seven runs and five RBIs that included two home runs. He is currently hitting .309 on the season with 6 home runs and 31 RBIs. Spilborghs was the Mallards co-MVP in the team's inaugural season, hitting .331 with 13 doubles. After his 2002 season at Santa Barbara, he was selected by the Rockies in the MLB Free Agent Draft. Spilborghs' Rockies visit Wisconsin for a 4-game series versus the Milwaukee Brewers beginning Monday. The Mallards makeshift lineup and pitching staff hung with the Woodchucks and came back from deficits of 6-3 and 7-6 to tie the game and take the Woodchucks to extra innings for the third time in three meetings this season.
