Rivers to try to end three-game skid tonight at Eau Claire

Madison, WI - July 23, 2008. Alex Rivers (Santa Clara) makes his fifth start of the season tonight for the Mallards in hopes of ending the team's three-game losing streak. Eau Claire defeated Madison Tuesday night 8-2 at Carson Park and will send left-hander J.D. Reichenbach to the mound to try to get the sweep of the Mallards. Following tonight's game the team heads to Green Bay for a pair of games before returning to the "Duck Pond" Saturday and Sunday for games against Waterloo. Mallards offense struggles, team drops third straight

Eau Claire, WI – July 22, 2008. The Mallards offense sputtered tonight against the Eau Claire Express, managing just two runs on three hits and dropped an 8-2 contest in front of 1,374 fans at Carson Park Tuesday night. D.J. Mauldin earned the win for the Express, working seven solid innings and allowing just two hits and no earned runs. Kyle Heim (Iowa) took the loss for the Mallards, pitching four innings and giving up one unearned run and two hits. Mallards lose a heart-breaker on Vaughn homerun, 3-2

LaCrosse, WI – July 21st, 2008. The Madison Mallards lost late to the LaCrosse Loggers on Monday night, courtesy of a sixth inning Cory Vaughn (San Diego St.) three-run home run. This comeback victory completed the sweep of the double header tonight, making up a game from earlier this season. The Mallards will travel tomorrow to Eau Claire to take on the Express. The Mallards made it four wins in a row Saturday night with an 8-4 victory over division-rival La Crosse in front of 6,453 fans at the “Duck Pond.” Getting the offense going has been no problem for the Mallards as of late, and the team reached double figures in hits for the fourth straight game. Mallards get 1-hit by Loggers, Lose 3-1 in LaCrosse

LaCrosse, WI – July 20th, 2008. The Madison Mallards were stifled by Troy Watson (UNLV) and the LaCrosse Loggers, losing 3-1 in the first game of a double header hosted by the Loggers. The game was only seven innings due to Northwoods League rules. The Mallards will be starting their next game approximately 30 minutes after the first ended. The team collected only one hit over during the game and struck out ten times. It was another stellar night for all facets of the Mallards offense at the “Duck Pond” on Saturday, as the team tied a season-high with 16 hits in an 11-5 pounding of the Battle Creek Bombers in front of a season-high 7,475 fans. Even after falling behind 5-0 the Mallards offense kept plugging away and scored 11 unanswered runs, including multiple runs in each of the last five innings, to win the game. A three-run seventh inning, highlighted by Luke Stewart’s (UAB) fifth home run of the season, propelled the Mallards to a 6-3 win over the Battle Creek Bombers in front of 6,751 fans at the “Duck Pond” Friday night. Mallards offense explodes for season-high 16 hits in 11-5 victory over Beetles

Madison, WI – July 17, 2008. It was a different story at the “Duck Pond” Thursday night, as the Beetles and the Mallards combined for 16 runs and 28 hits one day after a 5-2 Beetles victory in which there were only 10 total hits. Madison salvaged a series split with the 11-5 victory on Thursday in which they had a season-high 16 hits. Every starter for both teams had at least one hit in the game. Mallards announce 2008 playoff ticket information

Madison, WI – July 15, 2008. With a first-half Northwoods League South Division championship under their belts the Madison Mallards are returning to the postseason after a one-year hiatus in 2007, and the team is pleased to announce playoff ticket information for all fans wishing to catch the action at the “Duck Pond.” The Mallards will be hosting their first playoff game on either Tuesday, August 12 or Wednesday, August 13, with more details to be determined as the playoff field is finalized. Mankato’s Michael Rockett blasts 10 long balls to win the 2008 NWL Home Run Derby

Madison, WI – July 13, 2008. Mankato outfielder Michael Rockett hit 10 home runs, including five in the final round, to win the 2008 Northwoods League Home Run Derby Sunday night at the “Duck Pond.” Rockett, a 6’1” 165 lb junior from the University of Texas-San Antonio, blasted numerous long balls over the entire left-field Budweiser Rooftop, a distance well over 380’ from home plate. He hit five long balls in the first round to advance to meet Waterloo outfielder Joey Register (Texas A&M), Green Bay infielder Nick O’Shea (Minnesota), and Wisconsin outfielder Troy Frazier (Kentucky) in the final round. A two-run triple by Luke Stewart (UAB) put the Mallards on top by one in the eighth, but the bullpen gave it back in the bottom half and the Mallards fell to the Wisconsin Woodchucks 4-3 in Wausau. Mallards score season-high 15 runs, beat Alexandria 15-12

Alexandria, MN – July 10, 2008. In a matchup of All-Star pitchers it was the offense for both teams that stole the show, as the Mallards used an eight-run fifth inning to propel themselves to a 15-12 victory over the Alexandria Beetles. Gabriel Shaw (Louisville) and Matt Hill did not have their all-star stuff tonight, as Shaw was relieved after three innings of work and Hill was sent to the showers after giving up four runs in that eight-run Madison fifth. The win gives the Mallards the series sweep of the Beetles, and means that the Mallards will head back to Madison with a 5-5 record on the 10-game, 11-day road trip and a 2-4 second-half mark. A day after leaving nine runners on base in a 4-1 defeat the Mallards again struggled to move runners Tuesday night, stranding 11 on base in a 3-0 loss to the Duluth Huskies. Mallards drop third straight, fall at Duluth 4-1

Duluth, MN – July 7, 2008. Missed scoring opportunities and strikeouts proved to be the undoing for the Mallards tonight, as they lost the series opener to the Duluth Huskies 4-1. The defeat drops the South Division first-half champion Mallards to 0-3 to start the second half. The Mallards left nine runners on base and struck out 13 times in the contest. Alumni Update: Spilborghs takes advantage of playing time

July 6, 2008. With Colorado Rockies centerfielder Willy Taveras still nursing a sore left quad, former Mallard Ryan Spilborghs (2001) continues to swing a hot bat while hitting leadoff for the Mile-High club. In the first three games of a four game series versus the Florida Marlins ending Sunday, Spilborghs (pictured) was 7-for-14 with seven runs and five RBIs that included two home runs. He is currently hitting .309 on the season with 6 home runs and 31 RBIs. Spilborghs was the Mallards co-MVP in the team's inaugural season, hitting .331 with 13 doubles. After his 2002 season at Santa Barbara, he was selected by the Rockies in the MLB Free Agent Draft. Spilborghs' Rockies visit Wisconsin for a 4-game series versus the Milwaukee Brewers beginning Monday. Madison, WI - July 5, 2008. The Mallards will try to salvage a series split with the Wisconsin Woodchucks tonight, when the two teams square off at 6:35 p.m. from Wausau. Right-hander Nolan Cain (LSU) will make his second start of the season for the Mallards, trying to improve on his first outing in which he was roughed up in one-and-two-thirds innings pitched. Mallards drop offensively-challenged contest 3-2

Wausau, WI – July 5, 2008. A three-run fourth inning was all the Wisconsin Woodchucks needed to defeat the Madison Mallards 3-2 behind eight innings of two-hit baseball by Bobby Pritchett. The right-hander scattered two base hits and allowed one unearned run, while striking out eight Mallards. Mallards starter Nolan Cain (LSU) redeemed himself after struggling in his first start of the season, pitching three innings tonight and holding the Woodchucks hitless. The two teams combined for only seven hits on the night, and the Mallards missed numerous scoring opportunities, leaving eight runners on base. Mallards drop second-half opener 8-7 in 10 innings

Wausau, WI – July 4, 2008. The South Division first-half champion Mallards dropped the opening game of the second half to the Wisconsin Woodchucks 8-7 in 10 innings. The Mallards makeshift lineup and pitching staff hung with the Woodchucks and came back from deficits of 6-3 and 7-6 to tie the game and take the Woodchucks to extra innings for the third time in three meetings this season. Rob Curry earned the win for the Woodchucks in five innings of relief work in which he struck out nine Mallards, and Travis High (NC State) moved from the field to the mound for the bottom of the 10th and absorbed the loss. Read More

Mallards sign pair of pitchers to bolster bullpen

The Madison Mallards received much-needed help this week with the signing of left-handed junior pitcher Brant Combs (Missouri St.) and right-handed redshirt junior pitcher Kyle Rutter (NC State) to bolster a bullpen in need of power arms. The addition of Combs and Rutter comes after the Mallards waived Russell Harben (S. Alabama) due to a season-ending foot injury and Evan LeBlanc (Santa Clara), whom signed with the New York Mets after being drafted in the 23rd round of the June MLB Amateur Draft. The junior lefty from UCLA threw eight solid innings and was helped by a three-run 5th inning by the MoonDogs as they defeated the Madison Mallards 4-1 on Tuesday, July 1st.
