After transferring from John A. Logan Community College outfielder Daniel Webb, in 57 games for the University of Illinois, batted .332 with 12 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR and a .397 on base percentage this spring. Before coming to Illinois Webb put up solid numbers for Logan CC by being named All-Great Rivers Athletic Conference and All-Region 24 in 2005. A fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Webb looks to continue his success in ’07 with the Mallards this summer.

Following your time at John A. Logan CC, why did you choose Illinois to go play ball?
“Well it was a family oriented type situation in which my older brother went to Illinois and he constantly was telling me that it was good fit and a good place. Also our head coach at Illinois played under my coach at Logan CC, so that connection helped with my decision.”

When did you start playing baseball?
“At a young age, and my brother was mostly responsible. He was really into playing the game and playing with him got me even more interested.”

Do you have a favorite MLB team that you follow constantly?
“I’m a big St. Louis Cardinals fan and Mark McGwire was my favorite player. Watching him go after the home run record at that time was such a special experience to witness.”

What is different about your game in college as opposed to your game in high school?
“I have learned so much about the pitching. Obviously the talent and competition is on a different level in college, but with Logan CC and now Illinois I have learned so much about hitting and my approach at the plate.”

What are you going to improve upon this summer as a player for the Mallards?
“I definitely want to become stronger. I would like to see myself become a gap hitter or pick up warning track power. My power numbers seem to be a little down and if I can improve my swing by getting good opportunities at the plate, then those numbers should go up.”

Do you have a memory that stands out from your earlier playing days?
“We won the District Championship when I was with Logan CC. I was a key factor in helping the team win that ball game and it was the first time in a while that Logan CC had a championship within the program.”

What is one word that describes you as a player?
“That’s a difficult question but probably confident. I don’t question my abilities whether it’s offensively or defensively. Confidence is a big part of baseball and it ‘s important to have that on your side when it comes to baseball.”

Where do you see yourself as a ball player in five years?
“First off I would like to see myself have a big senior season with Illinois, and then you never know, but most likely I would just want to get drafted and then see what goes from there.”
