Mallards look to finish strong as first-half ends Thursday in Green Bay

Last night's Box Score

Green Bay, WI - July 2, 2009. The Mallards will look to finish the Northwoods League first half of the season on a high note as the team looks to sweep the Green Bay Bullfrogs tonight at 6:35 p.m. at Joannes Stadium.

In last night's 2-0 victory over the Bullfrogs, pitching dominated the headlines as Mallards starter Cody Winiarski (MATC) provided six scoreless innings while only allowing three hits to pick up his fourth win of the season. Dan Burawa (St. John's) then struck out three batters in the seventh inning and Denny Clement (Texas A&M) kept his ERA at a perfect 0.00 in recording the last six outs of the game to pick up his fourth save.

Madison (19-14) was only able to muster five hits in the game, but did make them count at opportune times. In the fourth inning first baseman Harold Riggins (NC State) drove in shortstop Mark Ginther (Oklahoma State) to record his 28th RBI of the season and give the Mallards a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth, Troy Channing (St. Mary's) added one to the lead with an RBI single to score catcher Tyson Blaser (Iowa).

Tonight, the Mallards send right-hander Matt Morgan (Purdue) to the hill in search of the team's 20th victory to conclude the 34-game first half. Morgan is 2-1 with a 1.83 ERA in 34.1 innings over five starts. The curveball-throwing youngster really hasn't been hit hard all year as he has yet to allow more than three earned runs in any start. In Morgan's last start, he didn't allow an earned run in 5.2 innings of work against the Eau Claire Express on June 25.

The Bullfrogs will counter with left hander Chuck Lukanen (N. Illinois) who has been extremely sharp in accumulating a 4-1 record and 1.54 ERA in 35 innings over six starts. Like Morgan, Lukanen hasn't allowed more than three earned runs during a start. He is coming off a six-inning, eight strikeout victory over the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers on June 26.

Madison will head to Wausau Friday to battle the Wisconsin Woodchucks in the first game of the second half of the 2009 season. The Eau Claire Express won the NWL South Division First Half Championship while the Mankato MoonDogs won the North Division First Half Championship and a spot in the four-team playoffs.
