The Mallards had their chances but they couldn’t fight back from a Mike Marjama (Sacramento City CC) grand slam in the top of the fourth as the La Crosse Loggers won 10-3 in front of 5,577 fans Friday night. Mallards starter Dillon Napoleon (Heartland CC) took the loss and Tony Mueller (Winona State) received the win. The La Crosse Loggers (2-1) jumped out early on the Madison Mallards (2-1) when Mike Reeves (Florida Gulf Coast) hit an RBI single to score Marjama in the first. Patrick Hutcheson (Sequias CC) added another run for the Loggers in the second on another RBI single. The Mallards would get one run back in the second when Josh Parr (Illinois) hit an infield single to score Kyle Gaedele (Valparaiso) from third base. Prior to the hit, Gaedele hit a deep line drive to center for a triple. Gaedele ended the night 2-for-3 with one run and an RBI. Things really went downhill for Napoleon in the fourth inning, as Juan Avila (Long Beach State) reached base on an error on third baseman Justin Scanlon (Madison College). Following the error, Napoleon hit a batter and walked another to load the bases. Next up, the player of the game, Marjama hit the second pitch to deep left for a grand slam to extend the score to 6-1 in favor of the Loggers. During the bottom half of the inning, Mallards designated hitter Brent Kakwitch (Madison College) was robbed of a home-run by Trent Fuller (Sacramento City CC) who went full extension to jump and bring the ball back into the ballpark. Fuller’s catch was indicative of how the rest of the night would go for the Mallards. Loggers’ starter Mueller proved to be great at getting out of jams, especially in the bottom of the sixth when he forced Chris Barker (UNC-Greensboro) into a groundout to end the inning. Mueller gave the Loggers six solid innings of pitching, only giving up three runs and striking out three. That’s pretty good for a team that came into tonight’s game with the highest team ERA in the league after two games. The Mallards tried to strike again in the eighth, but ended up grounding into a 6-3 double play. Mallard’s Manager C.J. Thieleke knows his guys played hard, but just couldn’t come through when they were needed. “The effort was good, but we made things harder than they actually were; we couldn’t get a good tempo going,” said Thieleke. “Give credit to the Loggers, they were well-coached, we tried to fight back by hitting the ball hard, but the balls didn’t reach the gaps. Tomorrow, the guys have to make some corrections and use this game as a learning experience,” said Thieleke. The Mallards will take on the La Crosse Loggers once again for game two of the three game series.
